Rockstar could release GTA 6 on PC sooner to head off AI ports, former series lead suggests
Former Rockstar technical director Obbe Vermeij says the studio might release Grand Theft Auto 6 on PC sooner than its usual schedule, partly to limit the risk of unofficial AI-made ports competing with its own version. He says he would be concerned that players might use AI to adapt the PlayStation 5 game for PC, even if the result were inferior, because it could still affect sales.
Rockstar has typically released its console games before PC versions, often by a year or more, and rumours have suggested GTA 6 could reach PC before the end of March 2027. Vermeij says releasing one version at a time is easier for developers, but he left Rockstar in 2009 and does not know its plans. The article says official PC news is unlikely before the console release, as Take-Two may want to preserve the chance of selling the game to some players twice.
In short
- A former Rockstar lead thinks GTA 6’s PC release could come sooner.
- AI-made PC ports may threaten sales, despite being lower quality.
- Vermeij says he does not know Rockstar’s current release plans.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
An earlier PC release could help Rockstar reach PC players while interest is highest and reduce the window in which unofficial, AI-assisted adaptations might attract buyers. A simultaneous or closer launch could also give customers a clear, supported version and avoid the extra wait that has often accompanied Rockstar’s console releases.
The case against
Staggering releases lets developers focus on one platform at a time, which may help them manage technical work and deliver a polished game. A later PC launch could also preserve sales from players who buy on console first and PC later, while the former director’s comments are speculation rather than evidence of Rockstar’s current plans.
