Rockstar Games and GTA co-founder chimes in on the raging physical games debate: “If people want that, companies should provide it”

Eurogamer · 3 hours ago

Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser and long-time writer Lazlow Jones have weighed in on the ongoing debate over physical versus digital video games, following backlash over Grand Theft Auto 6's disc-free release and Sony's decision to end physical disc production for games after January 2028. Speaking to IGN at San Diego Comic-Con, the pair, who now work together at Absurd Ventures, offered measured views rather than taking a firm side, reflecting a wider industry discussion about the future of physical media in gaming.

Houser said he was largely indifferent personally but felt companies should offer physical copies "if people want that", while praising digital releases for allowing developers to patch and improve games post-launch. Lazlow acknowledged the appeal of physical discs but said he valued the convenience of downloading games digitally, such as for long flights, and drew a comparison to his current work producing physical comic books, which he called creatively different and "fulfilling". Their comments follow similar interventions from Sega's Shuji Utsumi, who said physical games remain valued at his company, and Hideo Kojima, who expressed sadness over Sony's move away from physical discs.
