Rockstar Games employees have locked in a union vote next month, and it’ll take place over Grand Theft Auto 6’s release window

Eurogamer ·

Rockstar Games employees will vote from 12 to 26 November on whether the company should formally recognise and negotiate with the Rockstar Game Workers Union. If approved, it would become the UK video games industry’s largest recognised union, making the result significant for workers’ representation at the studio.

The vote falls around Grand Theft Auto 6’s release window, while a legal case between Rockstar and the Independent Workers of Great Britain over the alleged unfair dismissal of more than 30 employees is due to conclude on 17 and 18 November. The union says the dismissals were an attempt to undermine union activity; Rockstar says the employees were fired for gross misconduct after sharing confidential information in a union Discord. Rockstar publishing head Jennifer Kolbe previously said the company would accept a union if staff wanted one.

In short

  • Rockstar staff vote on union recognition from 12 to 26 November.
  • A successful vote would create the UK games industry’s largest recognised union.
  • The vote coincides with GTA 6’s release window and an ongoing legal dispute.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

Formal recognition could give employees a collective way to negotiate over pay, working conditions and job security, and help them raise concerns with greater influence than individual workers may have. Supporters may also argue that a union vote is especially important amid disputed dismissals and demanding release schedules, while providing a clear measure of staff wishes.

The case against

Rockstar may argue that employees can raise concerns through existing channels and that formal recognition is not necessary if those arrangements work for staff. The company’s stated position is that the dismissed employees committed gross misconduct by sharing confidential information; those who accept that account may see the dispute as a matter of enforcing workplace rules rather than suppressing union activity, while valuing management flexibility during a major release.

Explained simply

Rockstar Games is a video game company best known for the Grand Theft Auto series. Its employees in the UK are seeking formal recognition for the Rockstar Game Workers Union, which would allow the union to negotiate with the company on workers’ behalf.

The Independent Workers of Great Britain is supporting the union campaign. Rockstar says it would accept a union if staff choose one; the employees’ vote will determine whether it is formally recognised. A separate legal case concerns the dismissal of more than 30 staff: the union says the dismissals targeted union activity, while Rockstar says they followed the sharing of confidential information.
