Rodri to have back surgery but Maresca brushes off transfer speculation

BBC Sport · 3 hours ago

Manchester City and Spain midfielder Rodri will undergo back surgery on Monday after helping Spain win the World Cup. New City manager Enzo Maresca said the 30-year-old needs rest and recovery afterwards, but gave no timetable for his return; the absence could affect City’s preparations for the new season.

Rodri was named the World Cup’s Golden Ball winner after starting all eight of Spain’s matches, following two injury-disrupted club seasons including a major knee injury in 2024-25. Maresca dismissed reports linking him with Real Madrid, saying speculation is normal around elite players, and expects other returning players to be available shortly before the Community Shield against Arsenal on 16 August.
