Rotherham charity worker accused of defrauding abuse victim out of compensation “crossed boundaries”
A vulnerable adults manager at a Rotherham charity faces fraud charges for allegedly exploiting her position to obtain £16,000 from a sexual abuse survivor. Kathryn Kelwick, 55, is accused of convincing the victim to apply for compensation through the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority, then arranging to receive half of the payments. The victim claims she transferred two substantial sums—£11,000 and later £5,000—under an agreement she eventually recognised as inappropriate.
In court testimony, the abuse survivor described how the support worker had "crossed boundaries" and "got in her head," leading her to hand over money she now views as having been obtained through manipulation of her vulnerable position. The victim only reported the matter after discussing it with her counsellor, who then contacted police. Kelwick denies the fraud allegation, and the trial at Sheffield Crown Court is ongoing.
