Axel Rudakubana, the 19-year-old who murdered three young girls at a Southport dance class in July 2024, has been transferred from HMP Belmarsh to Broadmoor high-security psychiatric hospital. The move has sparked controversy, with prison officers' union representatives accusing him of "manipulating the system" to secure an easier existence, but a former Broadmoor psychiatrist has firmly rejected this, insisting the transfer is no "holiday" and may in fact impose greater restrictions than prison life.

Rudakubana killed Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, Bebe King, six, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and attempted to murder eight other children and two adults, and is serving a minimum 52-year sentence. The transfer followed psychological assessments at Belmarsh and an alleged incident in May in which a prison officer was doused in scalding water; sources claim he had been keen on the move, reportedly calling hospital detention "easy street". Consultant psychiatrist Dr Bradley Hillier described Broadmoor's intense security measures, including double perimeter barriers, layered internal checkpoints, restricted items and constant staff monitoring, arguing that being treated as a patient rather than a prisoner can mean fewer rights, not more, given the heightened focus on risk.
