Russell Brand case must be wake-up call to protect women in media, Lisa Nandy says
Culture secretary Lisa Nandy says Russell Brand’s conviction should prompt media organisations and public institutions to improve protection for women who report abuse. She argues that exploitation remains a problem and that powerful institutions too often fail to protect those who speak up, whose careers can be at risk.
Brand was found guilty of raping one woman and sexually assaulting three others, and faces sentencing on Monday; the judge said he could receive a significant prison term. He is also under investigation over two further rape allegations. Nandy praised the BBC for joining the Creative Industries Independent Standards Authority, which supports whistleblowers, but urged other organisations to follow and said the government was considering whether further action might be needed.
In short
- Nandy says Brand’s conviction must drive change across media.
