Russell says his ‘confidence is back and growing’
George Russell has regained his confidence after winning his third race of the season in Azerbaijan last weekend, ending a three-month victory drought. After struggling with Mercedes' new car and engine at the start of the season, the British driver has made a breakthrough in understanding how to drive it naturally, and now believes he can compete for victories week in week out.
Russell currently trails team-mate Kimi Antonelli by 66 points in the championship with between seven and eight races remaining, giving him a third of the season to try to close the gap. Mercedes are introducing a major upgrade ahead of this weekend's race and hope it will further improve their performance as Russell seeks to reignite his title challenge.
