Russian double-tap drone strike kills 14 in Ukrainian mall, officials say

BBC World · 3 hours ago

A Russian "double-tap" drone strike on a shopping centre in Kryvyi Rih, central Ukraine, has killed at least 14 people and injured 121, according to local officials. President Volodymyr Zelensky, whose home town is Kryvyi Rih, condemned the daytime attack as "absolutely cynical and despicable", saying it was carried out in two waves, with the second strike hitting emergency workers responding to the scene. The attack underscores the continued intensity of Russian strikes on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure more than four years into the full-scale invasion.

Dnipropetrovsk regional head Oleksandr Hanzha said 22 children were among the injured, with 29 people in a serious condition, and warned the death toll could rise as people remain trapped in the rubble. BBC-verified footage showed the second drone striking the already-burning mall, and rescue teams from four other regions have been deployed to search for survivors. The strike came a day after a separate Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv killed 17 people, and follows Ukrainian strikes on a Russian oil refinery and military airfield, part of Kyiv's escalating campaign against facilities it says fund Russia's war effort.
