Russian strikes leave homes without power as Kherson truce nears end

BBC World ·

Russian attacks on energy infrastructure left hundreds of thousands of homes without power across four Ukrainian regions, while a separate strike in Vinnytsia killed two people, including a 13-year-old girl. The attacks came as a rare, localised ceasefire in Kherson was due to end on Sunday night, after allowing civilians to leave the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky.

More than 60,000 people in Dnipropetrovsk were still without electricity by early evening, despite repairs, and emergency power cuts were in place nationwide; Kyiv also faced prolonged outages and disrupted water supplies. The Kherson truce began on Tuesday and was expanded beyond Oleshky, where residents had been cut off by the Dnipro river, Russian forces and mined or drone-threatened routes. Evacuees travelled through occupied territory to Russia, then via Belarus into Ukraine; they ranged in age from one to 94. Ukraine also struck a missile-fuel producer in Russia’s Rostov region, damaging four production facilities, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky.

In short

  • Russian strikes caused widespread power cuts across Ukraine.
  • More than 60,000 in Dnipropetrovsk remained without electricity.
  • A brief Kherson truce enabled Oleshky residents to evacuate.
