Russian strikes trigger emergency power outages in several Ukrainian regions, cutting water supply across Kyiv
Russia has launched a major attack on Ukraine’s energy system, damaging facilities and prompting emergency power cuts in several regions, including Kyiv. The outages have disrupted public transport and temporarily halted the city’s water supply, while warming centres have opened in the hardest-hit districts.
Ukrenergo said Russian forces struck energy facilities more than 20 times in the previous 24 hours. Some customers may be without electricity for over 12 hours, but there is no precise estimate for how long the outages will last; Sumy and Poltava have introduced special emergency schedules.
In short
- Russian strikes damaged energy facilities across Ukraine.
- Some regions face outages lasting more than 12 hours.
- Kyiv’s water supply was temporarily shut off.
Explained simply
Ukraine’s electricity network serves homes, businesses, public transport and essential services such as water pumping. When power facilities are damaged or supply falls short, operators can cut electricity in parts of the country to reduce pressure on the wider network.
Ukrenergo is Ukraine’s national electricity grid operator, which coordinates power transmission across the country. Local authorities and energy companies manage outages and support affected residents, for example by opening warming centres.
The electricity system has been a target during Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, which began in 2022. Disruptions can affect daily life and make it harder to keep water, heating and transport services running.
