Rutgers came very close to pulling off a major upset against twelfth-ranked USC on Saturday, ultimately losing 42-35 in a closely contested match. The game featured an ill-timed interception returned for a touchdown in the third quarter and a controversial illegal substitution penalty against Rutgers that proved costly. Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano had a notable outburst, berating a side judge after the questionable penalty and knocking down a field marker during his tantrum.

Rutgers produced one of their strongest performances of the season, accumulating 460 total yards of offence. Quarterback Dylan Lonergan threw three touchdowns and two interceptions, whilst USC running back King Miller rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown. The Trojans remained undefeated at 4-0, though they have defensive issues to address if they wish to remain in playoff contention by December.
