The victory sends Rybakina into the semi-finals, while Osaka’s defeat is followed by her withdrawal from the Cincinnati Open through fatigue ahead of the US Open.

Osaka led 4-2 in the second set after taking the opener, but Rybakina won three consecutive games before prevailing in the tie-break. Osaka then missed four break points at 3-2 in the deciding set, after which Rybakina broke serve and closed out the match with her 15th ace despite making 72 unforced errors. Rybakina will face Coco Gauff, who progressed after Belinda Bencic withdrew with a hip injury; Iga Swiatek will play Elina Svitolina in the other semi-final.
