Sacha Baron Cohen is reportedly set to make his West End stage debut in The Popinjay Cavalier, the first play written and directed by film-maker Quentin Tarantino. The project marks a significant departure for both men: Tarantino's first foray into theatre writing, and Baron Cohen's first leading role in a major stage production, despite his background in physical comedy and clowning training. The pairing has generated considerable interest given Tarantino's stature as a film director and Baron Cohen's history with characters like Ali G and Borat.

According to Deadline, Baron Cohen will play the swashbuckling title role in the comedy, described as a "rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise" set in 1830s Europe, with staging by Sonia Friedman Productions and Sony Pictures Entertainment. The play was announced in March and is due to open in early 2027 at a West End venue yet to be confirmed; Tarantino has said he will relocate to England with his family for up to two years to work on it. Tarantino previously cast Baron Cohen in a small role in Django Unchained (2012), but the actor withdrew to appear in Les Misérables instead. Publicists for both Baron Cohen and the production did not confirm the casting when approached.
