Residents of Brightside, an area in north Sheffield, have spoken of their sadness after it was named one of Yorkshire's benefits hotspots, with locals describing ongoing problems with litter and drugs on the streets. The area, alongside neighbouring Hillsborough, has the county's highest proportion of working-age adults claiming Personal Independence Payment (PIP), a benefit for people with long-term health conditions or disabilities, prompting reflection from long-term residents on why the area has struggled despite its industrial heritage.

Figures from the House of Commons Library, published in July 2026, show 15.3% of working-age adults in the area claim PIP. Census data from 2021 covering the Shiregreen and Brightside ward found only 53% of residents described themselves as employed, with 41.7% economically inactive and 3.6% unemployed. Long-term residents, including 55-year-old Theresa Jessop and 54-year-old pub supervisor Lee, said the area has become rundown, citing dumped rubbish, poor upkeep of rented properties and visible drug use, while acknowledging that many claimants genuinely need support. Sheffield City Council has been approached for comment.
