SAG-AFTRA's National Board has adopted a resolution opposing Paramount Skydance's proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery unless enforceable production guarantees are included, marking a firmer stance than the actors' union had previously taken. However, it has stopped short of joining the Writers Guild of America (WGA) in filing a lawsuit to block the deal, choosing instead a largely symbolic show of support for the existing legal challenges.

The resolution, passed over the weekend, demands safeguards against reduced studio production alongside guarantees of increased US-based filmmaking, according to a joint statement from SAG-AFTRA President Sean Astin and National Executive Director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland. The union said it consulted lawyers, guild leaders, studio executives and the Department of Justice before acting. The merger has already secured approval from the US DOJ and the EU, though UK approval remains pending, and the Ellison family's hoped-for third-quarter closing is now on hold. A coalition of a dozen state attorneys general, led by California's Rob Bonta, has secured a temporary restraining order, and Paramount agreed on Friday to proceed directly to trial rather than face a preliminary injunction hearing; both this case and the WGA's separate lawsuit are before the same judge in the Northern District of California.
