Saltburn Cricket Club's second team conceded a scheduled cup match against Marton on Wednesday evening, days after being placed under investigation over allegations that a player clicked his fingers to influence an umpire's decision. The North Yorkshire and South Durham Cricket League opened its inquiry after complaints from Norton following Saltburn's Division 2 victory, and the incident has drawn widespread attention after footage of it went viral online, putting the amateur club under an unusual level of public scrutiny.

The controversy centres on Saltburn batter Brian Devine, accused of clicking his fingers as the ball passed Norton batter Noman Shabir's bat and was caught by wicketkeeper Josh Bowes, after which the umpire upheld an appeal and gave the wicket. The original clip has been viewed more than 7.5 million times on X, with Devine nicknamed "Clicky Ponting" online, and further footage from earlier matches has since surfaced alleging similar behaviour. A meeting involving Saltburn, the league and legal representatives took place on Tuesday, but no outcome has been announced, and the club said it withdrew from Wednesday's fixture simply because it could not field a team during the "holiday season."
