A Sydney woman's whirlwind holiday romance with a British man she met on a cruise from Sydney to the Whitsundays came to an abrupt end when his secret fiancée messaged her online. Sammi, 44, had put her love life on hold for 14 years while caring for her son through a battle with brain cancer, and had recently vowed to give up on dating altogether before meeting Liam McAuley, 41, whom she nicknamed "Mr UK", during a nine-day voyage in August. The pair grew inseparable, with fellow passengers reportedly mistaking them for a long-married couple, and vowed to continue their relationship despite living on opposite sides of the world.

Sammi documented the romance on TikTok, where she had already been chronicling her dating journey, and the posts drew thousands of followers alongside warnings from viewers that McAuley might be "love bombing" her. She said she had asked him directly whether he was single and even met his mother and sister, believing she had done her due diligence. Her happiness collapsed, however, when a comment from McAuley's long-term fiancée appeared beneath a celebratory social media post, leaving Sammi, by her own account, "humiliated and heartbroken" and facing accusations online of being a "homewrecker".
