Samsung and Motorola have released rival high-end flip phones within weeks of each other, giving foldable phone buyers a clear choice this summer. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8 launched on 22 July 2026 at $1,200, while the Motorola Razr Ultra has been on sale since May at $1,500, and the two devices differ enough in screen quality, design and cameras to make the decision less straightforward than price alone might suggest.

The Razr Ultra edges ahead on raw display specifications, with a 7.0-inch, 165Hz main screen reaching 5,000 nits versus the Flip 8's 6.9-inch, 120Hz panel at up to 3,000 nits, though Samsung has closed the usability gap by giving its cover screen full native app support for the first time. The Flip 8 is the more compact and pocketable of the two, weighing 180g against the Razr Ultra's 199g, while Motorola offers more distinctive finishes, including Alcantara and wood-effect backs, compared with Samsung's standard colour range; both phones share the same IP48 water and dust resistance rating. On cameras, the Razr Ultra has the edge on paper with three 50-megapixel sensors and 8K video, whereas the Flip 8 keeps its previous 50-megapixel main camera but leans on Samsung's Galaxy AI software tools to compensate.
