iFixit has provisionally rated Samsung’s $1,900 Galaxy Z Fold 8 four out of 10 for repairability, chiefly because its hinge remains susceptible to dust and small debris. The finding matters because damage to the hinge or inner display could require extensive dismantling and replacement of a combined assembly, potentially making repairs costly and difficult.

The phone has an IP48 ingress rating, which does not protect it from particles smaller than one millimetre. During testing, iFixit said the hinge began grinding and crunching after repeated opening and closing, and the device no longer opened normally. Samsung’s rivals, including recent Google Pixel Pro Fold models and Honor’s Magic V6, have IP6X dust-resistance ratings.
