Sandra Bullock has begun opening up about the death of her longtime partner Bryan Randall, who died in August 2023 aged 57 after a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Speaking on Jason Bateman's Smartless podcast, the actress, 62, described a "traumatic" ordeal that left her largely withdrawn from public life for around two years, according to insiders who spoke to the Daily Mail. Her willingness to discuss his death now coincides with the release of Practical Magic 2, her first leading film role in four years, which sources say has prompted her to speak about Randall in order to honour his memory.

Insiders said Bullock became increasingly isolated during Randall's three-year illness, which began during the Covid-19 pandemic, with one source claiming her "personality changed" as she withdrew from friends to focus on caregiving and raising her two adopted children, Louis, 16, and Laila, 12. Randall, a former model and photographer who met Bullock in 2015, had wanted to keep his declining health private, which reportedly deepened her sense of loneliness. She is said to have confided mainly in her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, and brother-in-law Ray Prado, before later telling close friends including Jennifer Aniston and Bateman. Randall, who also had an adult daughter, Skylar, was regarded by Bullock's children as a father figure and marked her first serious relationship after her highly publicised divorce from Jesse James in 2010.
