School founded by Charlotte Church operated without permission at former pig farm

BBC Entertainment · 2 hours ago

An outdoor school founded by Charlotte Church operated from a former pig farm in Wenvoe without planning permission, and Vale of Glamorgan Council has refused its retrospective application. The decision cited concerns about noise, local residents, pedestrian safety, parking, biodiversity and green infrastructure, and the project has appealed to the Welsh planning authority.

The Awen Project opened at the site in 2024 and applied for permission in October 2025. It says it is not closing, having moved on from land intended to be temporary, and says Church has not been involved for some time; no date has yet been set for the appeal hearing. The free, donation-funded project had previously lost permission to use nearby Woodland Trust land after alleged breaches raised health and safety concerns.

  • Retrospective planning permission for Awen Project’s Wenvoe site was refused.
  • Concerns included parking, noise, safety and environmental impact.
  • The project says it has moved site and will remain open.
