A one-year-old has died in hospital following a stabbing attack by their mother in the Blue Mountains, New South Wales, on Sunday, becoming the second child fatality from the incident. The mother allegedly stabbed three children, aged five, three and one, inside a parked car whilst they were strapped in their seats, before attempting to take her own life. The five-year-old died at the scene, whilst the three-year-old remains hospitalised. The mother has been charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder, with one attempted murder charge expected to be upgraded to murder following the one-year-old's death; she was refused bail and ordered to return to court on 20 November.

The family's father, who moved to Australia from Kenya in 2013 and was at work at the time of the attack, believed his wife was taking the children out for a picnic. The incident occurred around 1pm when the mother stopped her car near the Valley Heights Waterfall track. Two cyclists discovered the scene and provided first aid. Police stated the mother had no previous connections to the Blue Mountains area, and family sources indicated the couple's relationship had appeared stable with no known prior problems. The father has remained at the hospital supporting his surviving child whilst the family grapples with the tragedy.
