Second UK village to hold vote on leaving UK

The Independent ·

Barnham in Suffolk is preparing a symbolic referendum on leaving the UK, in protest at government plans to accommodate asylum seekers at the former RAF Barnham base. The proposal won strong support at a village meeting, with residents saying they want to demonstrate opposition to what they see as a lack of consultation.

A group will meet to set a timetable for the vote; Barnham has about 600 residents. It would follow Piddington in Oxfordshire, where an unofficial September ballot drew nearly 92 per cent turnout: 285 people backed “independence”, 26 opposed it and one ballot was spoiled. The Ministry of Defence says asylum seekers would usually stay at the site only during initial claim processing, while the government says former military bases can provide more manageable and affordable accommodation than hotels.

In short

  • Barnham plans a symbolic vote on leaving the UK.
  • Residents object to asylum seeker accommodation plans at a former RAF base.
  • Piddington’s unofficial vote drew nearly 92 per cent turnout.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

Residents may argue that a symbolic vote is a peaceful way to make strong local opposition visible and press ministers to consult people affected by a major change to their community. They may also question whether a former military site is suitable for asylum accommodation and whether the government’s plans adequately address local concerns.

The case against

Others may argue that providing temporary accommodation at a former military base is a practical way to process asylum claims and reduce reliance on hotels, particularly if stays are usually brief. They may also contend that an unofficial vote on leaving the UK cannot determine national policy and risks obscuring the need to consider both local impacts and the responsibilities owed to people seeking asylum.
