Senate Intel advances Clayton nomination for DNI

The Hill ·

The Senate Intelligence Committee has advanced Jay Clayton’s nomination to become director of national intelligence, moving it to consideration by the full Senate. The vote is significant because the role oversees the US intelligence community and is currently being filled on an acting basis by Bill Pulte.

The committee voted 9–8 along party lines after Democrats withdrew earlier indications of support following Clayton’s confirmation hearing, where he declined to state directly that Joe Biden won the 2020 election. Clayton is the US attorney for the Southern District of New York and a former Securities and Exchange Commission chair; Republicans have said they want a swift Senate vote.
