Serbia detains police officers over alleged use of force against protesters
Serbian authorities detained nine serving police officers and one former officer over allegations that they used excessive force against people held during anti-corruption protests in Belgrade last year. The arrests are the first major detentions linked to alleged violence against protesters during the two-year protest movement.
The interior ministry said the officers, who served in an elite unit, tortured and intimidated detainees in a government compound garage on 14 and 15 August 2025, using force and threats to cause severe suffering and extract information or punish them unlawfully. The protests followed the 2024 railway station canopy collapse that killed 16 people and eventually led to the SNS losing power in a snap election on 25 October; Vučić and his allies deny wider accusations of political violence and corruption.
