Sexton backs Furlong after groin grab allegation

BBC Sport ·

Ireland assistant coach Jonathan Sexton has backed Tadhg Furlong, saying he does not believe the prop would have grabbed an opponent in the groin. Furlong has been cited over the allegation following Leinster’s win against Munster, and the disciplinary process could affect his availability for Ireland’s November fixtures.

Munster’s Gavin Coombes reported the alleged incident to referee Andrew Brace during Saturday’s match, but television match official Colin Stanley found no evidence at the time. Furlong, 33, trained with Ireland on Tuesday; if found guilty, he could face a suspension and miss four November matches, as well as club games. Sexton also said Sam Prendergast was making progress from a wrist injury and might return to some training later in the week.

In short

  • Sexton says he does not believe Furlong committed the alleged offence.
  • Furlong’s disciplinary hearing could determine his availability for Ireland’s November games.
  • Prendergast may resume some training after a wrist injury.
