Plans for further bus gates in Sheffield city centre have prompted mixed views, with supporters arguing they would give buses priority, reduce congestion and make central streets more pleasant for walking and cycling. The proposals form part of the Connecting Sheffield city-centre scheme, which includes gates on parts of Furnival Gate and Rockingham Street, alongside an existing gate on Arundel Gate. Bus gates generally restrict access to authorised vehicles such as buses, taxis and bicycles; the council says the measures are intended to improve bus reliability and support cleaner travel, while consultation feedback has highlighted concerns about local access and disruption.
