Sheffield City Council is advancing negotiations to obtain £10 million in private and philanthropic funding to complete a £45 million renovation of the Crucible Theatre. Public sources have already committed £35 million through the South Yorkshire mayor's office and central government grants. The council is pursuing multiple funding routes including formal agreements and in-kind contributions from potential partners.

The expansion will increase the venue's seating capacity by 50 percent from 964 to 1,500 seats, configured as a theatre-in-the-round layout. Council officials project the hosting of World Snooker championships at the upgraded facility could deliver approximately £208 million in economic benefit to Sheffield across 25 years. The project has cleared approval for further design work and business case development following a funding framework agreed at a March meeting convened by Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
