A 19-year-old Sheffield man has been convicted and sentenced for animal cruelty after failing to provide veterinary care for a kitten with a broken leg. Kingston Billings pleaded guilty to an animal welfare offence at Sheffield Magistrates' Court on 15 September after leaving the kitten, Prince, to suffer for at least two weeks with an untreated fracture caused by blunt force trauma. The case highlights the importance of prompt veterinary intervention for injured animals and demonstrates the legal consequences of neglecting animal welfare responsibilities.

Billings brought Prince to a vet on 9 January after the kitten sustained the injury on 26 December, but then ignored veterinary advice by failing to attend follow-up appointments, collect free painkillers, or seek further treatment. He subsequently claimed to have given Prince away whilst the kitten remained injured, and initially evaded contact with the RSPCA before being arrested on a warrant. The court heard that Prince suffered for a minimum of 17 days and that a reasonable owner would have sought immediate veterinary care. Billings was banned from keeping animals for five years and sentenced to an 18-month community order comprising 25 Rehabilitation Activity Requirement Days and 150 hours of unpaid work, plus fines totalling £264. Prince was eventually rehomed.
