A 41-year-old postgraduate student from India studying at Sheffield University was arrested after travelling to Doncaster to meet what he believed was a 13-year-old girl with whom he had engaged in sexually explicit online conversations. He arrived with prosecco, wedding rings, and his passport, having told the decoy he needed to marry a "British girl" and would provide her with a house once she was old enough. The court heard he simultaneously conducted similar sexually explicit communications with three other decoys he believed to be aged 14.

The man received a custodial sentence of three years and ten months after admitting to attempting sexual communication with a child and arranging sexual activity with a minor, alongside a decade-long sexual harm prevention order. His defence counsel attributed his actions to severe financial loss from a cryptocurrency scam and his failure to extend his student visa, characterising the marriage proposal as an ill-conceived immigration strategy rather than evidence of predatory intent toward the individuals involved.
