Shenmue 3: Enhanced Edition has been delayed to “get everything right”
Shenmue 3: Enhanced Edition has been delayed until early 2027, after it was originally expected in the fourth quarter of this year. Publisher Inin Games says development is progressing as it finalises the game, aiming to “get everything right”; the delay gives the team more time before the updated version reaches modern consoles.
The edition is planned for PC, PS5, Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S. It promises improved visuals, performance boosts and quality-of-life changes, with possible DLSS and FSR support, more residents in Niaowu and a classic camera option inspired by the first two Shenmue games. Revealed in August 2025, it offers another release for a third game that divided fans.
In short
- Shenmue 3: Enhanced Edition is now due in early 2027.
- Inin Games says it needs more time to finalise the release.
- Updates include visual, performance and quality-of-life improvements.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
The delay may give the developers time to polish the updated edition and make its promised improvements work well across several platforms. For a game that divided fans, a more finished release could offer a better experience and help the new version meet expectations.
The case against
The delay means players will wait longer for an edition that was already expected this year, with no firm release date beyond early 2027. Some may reasonably question whether extra time will deliver enough value, particularly as several announced features remain possibilities rather than confirmed additions.
Explained simply
Shenmue is an adventure game series created by Yu Suzuki, following Ryo Hazuki as he investigates his father’s murder. Shenmue 3, released in 2019, continues Ryo’s search in China and was made after a long gap between the earlier games.
Inin Games is the publisher of the planned updated edition, while Suzuki’s studio Ys Net developed the original game. The new version is intended for current-generation consoles and PC, with technical improvements and changes to how it plays.
The third game drew mixed reactions from players, including discussion about how closely it followed the style of its predecessors. Its updated release gives newcomers another way to try it and long-time fans a version adapted for newer hardware.
