A Kitsap County sheriff’s deputy rescued a man from a burning SUV after a high-speed police chase ended in a crash in Kingston, Washington. The incident matters because the deputy entered an increasingly dangerous scene to free the trapped driver before the vehicle was engulfed.

The driver allegedly ignored a traffic stop, accelerated to 111 mph and later crashed into a tractor in a yard. After initially trying to break the driver’s-side window, the deputy freed him through the passenger door, with help from a Port Gamble officer who used a fire extinguisher. The injured man was airlifted to hospital and faces charges of attempting to elude police and reckless driving.
