Sherrod Brown, an Ohio Democrat, wins return to US Senate
Democrat Sherrod Brown has won a return to the US Senate, defeating Republican incumbent Jon Husted, according to Associated Press projections. The result is a setback for Republicans in a race seen as important to control of the Senate.
More than $500m was spent on advertising, making it the second most expensive Senate race of the midterm cycle and among the ten costliest non-presidential races in US history. Husted, appointed in 2025 to replace JD Vance, backed several of President Donald Trump’s policies; Brown campaigned on his ties to labour unions and working-class communities amid concerns about the cost of living. Brown will serve the remainder of Vance’s term, which ends in January 2029.
In short
- Sherrod Brown has won back an Ohio Senate seat.
- More than $500m was spent on race advertising.
- Brown’s term runs until January 2029.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Brown’s victory can be seen as voters choosing a senator with established ties to labour unions and working-class communities at a time when the cost of living is a concern. Supporters may also view the result as a way to give Ohio a senator they believe will better represent those interests and provide a check on the president’s policies.
The case against
Husted’s supporters could argue that his backing for several of the president’s policies offered voters a clear route to support the administration’s agenda in the Senate. They may also have preferred an incumbent appointed to the seat who could continue that approach, and regard the result as a loss of representation for those priorities.
Explained simply
The US Senate is one of two chambers of Congress, where lawmakers debate and vote on federal laws. Each state has two senators, and control of the chamber can affect which legislation advances and whether presidential appointments are confirmed.
Sherrod Brown is a Democrat who previously represented Ohio in the Senate. Jon Husted, a Republican, was appointed to the seat in 2025 after JD Vance left it to become vice-president; whoever holds it now serves the rest of Vance’s term, which ends in January 2029.
Ohio has been a closely watched state in recent US elections, and the Senate contest drew unusually large spending on campaign advertising. Brown emphasised his connections with unions and working-class communities, while Husted supported several of President Donald Trump’s policies.
