Shock poll hands Trump rude wake-up call on the economy and upcoming midterm election
A Washington Post/Ipsos poll indicates that economic dissatisfaction could be a significant problem for Donald Trump and Republican candidates ahead of the November midterm elections. Although voters did not give either major party a clear advantage on the economy, the findings suggest that high living costs and pessimism about future prospects may shape the congressional vote.
Sixty-five per cent disapproved of Trump’s handling of the economy, while 33% approved, and 54% of registered voters cited the economy and high prices as a leading voting issue. Nearly half expected the economy to worsen over the next year, 65% said groceries were unaffordable, and 59% lacked confidence that negotiations over the Iran war would return petrol prices to normal. The survey of 2,648 US adults was conducted from 8 to 13 July.
