Tarsha Golightly, an 18-year-old mother, was farewelled at a funeral in Geelong, Australia, two and a half weeks after she was found dead outside her cell at Melbourne's Dame Phyllis Frost Centre, a maximum-security women's prison, on 27 July. Her death, which came a day before she was due to face court, has drawn attention to her troubled short life, which was marked by addiction, instability and time in the state care system.

Mourners heard that Tarsha's birth in January 2008 was medically difficult, requiring several weeks in hospital, and that she was diagnosed with ADHD at age four before being removed from her mother's custody at 11. Her white coffin, adorned with red roses, was carried into the service at Armstrong Creek by four pallbearers to music including Dancing in the Sky and Nothing Compares 2 U. The service also revealed that Tarsha had given birth to a son at 16 whom she was unable to raise herself; he remains in the care of an undisclosed family member. Her father, Rob Golightly, delivered an emotional tribute during the ceremony.
