The suspected murderer of a Pittsburgh paediatrician has been charged with an additional rape and sexual assault that allegedly occurred just hours before the fatal attack. Elijah Hemingway, 32, is accused of brutally killing Dr Idris Evans, 46, a paediatric critical care physician, and stabbing Evans's wife, Gina, during a midnight home invasion. The revelation that the same suspect committed a violent sexual assault on an unrelated woman mere hours earlier suggests a pattern of extremely serious criminal violence across a single day.

According to police, Hemingway allegedly ambushed a woman on a public path in Wilkinsburg that Wednesday morning, threatening to kill her and stealing her mobile phone. That same night, he reportedly entered the Evans family home through an open window and attacked the sleeping couple with a kitchen knife around 12:30am. Dr Evans died from his injuries; his wife survived despite serious wounds and managed to alert their two children (aged eight and twelve) to escape. Hemingway claims Dr Evans had invited him over earlier, though police state he provided no corroborating details. He has preliminary hearings scheduled for 8–9 October and has not yet retained legal representation.
