Signalman retires after 38 years at Britain’s most unusual rail bridge
Mick Brooks is retiring at 65 after 38 years working at Keadby Canal signal box, where he helped manage a rare moving railway bridge. The crossing carries the Doncaster to Scunthorpe line over the Stainforth and Keadby Canal, and also has to accommodate boats, pedestrians and road traffic.
The railway crossing dates to 1866, while its sliding bridge was built in 1925 and is believed to be the only operational example of its type on Britain’s national rail network. Brooks began railway work in 1977 and saw major changes in signalling and the local area during his career; Network Rail says his knowledge and dedication benefited colleagues.
