Singapore cyber agency urges stronger defences after fridge cyberattacks in Europe
Singapore’s Cyber Security Agency (CSA) has urged organisations to strengthen protection for internet-connected operational technology after cyberattacks disrupted refrigeration systems at supermarkets across Europe. The incidents show that cyber threats can affect physical operations, supply chains and essential services, including in sectors that may not see themselves as likely targets.
No similar attacks have been reported in Singapore. The European cases reportedly involved refrigeration controllers exposed online, but the precise attack methods remain under investigation; potential weaknesses include default or weak passwords, outdated software and inadequate access controls. CSA is working with the Singapore Food Agency and supermarket operators, and advises organisations to restrict direct internet access, use strong authentication and secure remote access, update systems, and separate operational networks.
In short
- European supermarket refrigeration systems were hit by cyberattacks.
- Singapore reports no similar incidents so far.
- CSA urges stronger security for remote access to operational technology.
