Singapore to end N95 mask distribution on Saturday as haze abates
Singapore will end its haze response measures from Saturday, Nov 7, as air quality improves. The changes include stopping N95 mask distribution to vulnerable residents, closing designated haze shelters and ending daily advisories.
The Health Ministry’s Public Health Preparedness Clinic and Haze Subsidy schemes will end on Nov 12, while measures for outdoor workers and the inter-agency Haze Task Force will stand down from Nov 7. Mask collection ends at 6pm on Saturday; close to 30 per cent of eligible Singaporeans had collected masks by Oct 29. NEA attributed the improvement to inter-monsoon conditions, increased rainfall and fewer hotspots in the region.
In short
- Singapore’s haze measures end from Nov 7 as conditions improve.
- N95 mask collection closes at 6pm on Saturday.
- Health subsidy schemes will end on Nov 12.
Explained simply
Singapore’s haze response was introduced to help residents cope with smoke carried across the region, which can worsen air quality and affect breathing. The National Environment Agency monitors air quality, while the Health Ministry supports healthcare services and vulnerable residents.
Measures included free N95 masks for eligible residents, designated shelters and advice on reducing exposure. N95 masks are designed to filter very small particles; they can be useful during haze but need to fit properly. Outdoor workers may also face greater exposure because they spend more time outside.
Air quality can change with weather and fires in the wider region. Rain and shifting seasonal winds can reduce haze, while the Haze Task Force brings government agencies together to coordinate responses.
