Singer Self Esteem to make cinematic debut in film set in 1980s
Singer Self Esteem, whose real name is Rebecca Lucy Taylor, has been cast in her first major feature-film role in Mountain, a coming-of-age drama set in 1980s Wales. The film is significant as it marks a move into cinema for the musician and actor, while also bringing a Welsh story and landscape to the screen through director Celyn Jones’s personal connection to Holyhead.
Mountain follows a neglected young boy seeking friendship and belonging after meeting a man who lives alone on a mountain. Filmed in Holyhead on Anglesey and completed earlier in 2026, it also stars Peter Mullan, Iwan Rheon and Seth Isaac Thomas; no release date has been announced. Taylor has previously appeared in television dramas and performed in West End productions including Cabaret, while Jones described filming in his home town as an emotional homecoming.
