Explained simply
Milcho Manchevski is a filmmaker from North Macedonia, a country in south-eastern Europe that was part of socialist Yugoslavia until it broke up in the early 1990s. The film is set in the years after that change, when the country was adjusting to a new political and economic order.
Its central characters are a brother and sister who steal bronze objects, including busts and manhole covers. An injury and their encounter with the underworld alter the course of their lives. The story’s setting links family life and crime with a period of wider change in the country.
