Six German Shepherd puppies begin training with Greater Manchester Police

Daily Mail ·

Greater Manchester Police has welcomed six female German Shepherd puppies into its Tactical Dog Unit, beginning their preparation to become operational police dogs. Their arrival matters to the force because they are the offspring of Jax, a retired police dog, and continue a bloodline already represented in the unit.

Named Stormy, Sylvie, Gracie, Rosie, Skye and Jet, the 13-week-old puppies have each been paired with a handler. They will spend more than a year bonding, learning and shadowing experienced dogs before starting a 13-week operational training course. Their older siblings, Harley and Hully, already serve with GMP; the force says its German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois helped officers make about 536 arrests in the past year.

Police dogs work alongside officers in Greater Manchester to help tackle crime, from tracking suspects to searching buildings and apprehending offenders. The force maintains a dedicated team of these animals, mostly German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois, trained to support officers in the field.

Six new German Shepherd puppies have now entered the Greater Manchester Police training programme. Named Stormy, Sylvie, Gracie, Rosie, Skye and Jet, these 13-week-old animals will each work closely with an assigned handler, spending more than a year learning and bonding before they begin their formal operational training course.

These puppies continue a proven bloodline within the force, as they are daughters of Jax, a retired police dog, and sisters to Harley and Hully, who already work for Greater Manchester Police. Last year, the force's police dogs helped officers make around 536 arrests, demonstrating their value in policing.
