Explained simply
Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is a novel first published in 1813, set among families in early 19th-century England. It follows Elizabeth Bennet, one of five sisters, and her changing relationship with the wealthy Mr Darcy.
The Bennet family’s future is shaped by expectations around marriage, money and social standing. Elizabeth and Darcy’s misunderstandings and first impressions sit alongside the sisters’ different hopes, making the story both a romance and a portrait of the limits women faced in Austen’s time.
Austen’s novel has been adapted for film and television many times. This new series brings familiar characters to a new screen production, with Emma Corrin as Elizabeth and Jack Lowden as Darcy.
