Some Reflections Gloria Steinem Shared At Her Last Public Event

The Hollywood Reporter · 10 hours ago

Gloria Steinem's final major public appearances took place on 14 and 16 July at New York's Minetta Lane Theatre, in an event titled "Yes to the Unknown: A Night with Gloria Steinem," before her death on 2 September. During the evening, moderated by longtime friend and collaborator Amy Richards, Steinem reflected on her decades-long journalism career and offered reminders about the importance of community, connection and being understood by others.

The programme covered her early days as a "girl reporter," her role in launching New York magazine and Ms. Magazine, and profiles she wrote of figures including Barbra Streisand, James Baldwin and John Lennon. She also spoke movingly about her mother, a reporter for the Toledo Blade who gave up a career she loved, and paid tribute to Baldwin's legacy. The event, which opened with a recorded poem from Alice Walker, will be released as an Audible Original on 17 September.
