The trailer for the fifth and final season of Canadian sitcom Son of a Critch shows teenage protagonist Mark questioning his future, pursuing acting and taking work as a hot-dog mascot while describing himself as having “a midlife crisis at 17”. The concluding season will also address the 1992 cod moratorium, giving the semi-autobiographical comedy a more serious backdrop as Mark’s family and community face economic uncertainty.

The CBC series, also shown on The CW, is set in Newfoundland in the late 1980s and early 1990s and stars Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as a young version of creator Mark Critch. Critch plays Mark’s father, alongside Malcolm McDowell as his grandfather; the real cod moratorium eliminated about 30,000 jobs and pushed many Canadian families into poverty.
