Sonic the Hedgehog Officially Returns to Movie Theaters this Christmas
Sonic the Hedgehog will appear in *The Angry Birds Movie 3*, giving the character a cinema outing before the fourth Sonic film arrives in 2027. The cameo was revealed in the film’s second trailer, where Sonic races Chuck, the bird voiced by Josh Gad; the crossover reflects the shared ownership of the game franchises.
Sega bought Rovio, the Finnish company behind Angry Birds, for $775 million in 2023, and the characters have since crossed over in several games. *The Angry Birds Movie 3* is due in cinemas on 23 December, with a story about Red balancing fatherhood and a new threat from the pigs. *Sonic the Hedgehog 4* is scheduled for 19 March 2027, followed by a still-mysterious Sonic spin-off planned for December 2028.
In short
- Sonic appears in the second trailer for *The Angry Birds Movie 3*.
- The crossover follows Sega’s $775 million purchase of Rovio.

Explained simply
Sonic the Hedgehog began as the lead character in a Sega video game series, while Angry Birds started as a mobile game made by Finland’s Rovio. Both have since expanded into films and other games, giving the characters audiences beyond their original players.
Sega bought Rovio in 2023, bringing the two game franchises under the same company. Their characters have crossed over in several games, as well as appearing in films based on their separate stories.
The films draw on different casts and settings: Sonic’s adventures centre on the fast-moving blue hedgehog, while Angry Birds follows Red and the other birds in their conflict with the pigs. The crossover shows how companies can bring characters from separate entertainment series together for new audiences.
