Sony and Universal ask court to force Suno investor Lightspeed to testify about the ‘legal risk of training data’

Music Business Worldwide ·

Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment are asking a federal court to require Suno investor Lightspeed Venture Partners to provide documents and testimony in their copyright case against the AI music company. They say the material could shed light on Suno’s knowledge of legal risks around training data, its market strategy and whether any alleged infringement was deliberate.

The labels’ narrowed subpoena seeks records from 7 June 2025 onwards and testimony about risks including regulation of training data and lawsuits by record labels. Lightspeed led Suno’s $125 million Series B in May 2024 and later invested in its Series C and D; the latter raised more than $400 million at a $5.4 billion valuation. Lightspeed has moved to quash the subpoena, while the labels argue that investor records are relevant to Suno’s fair use defence and conduct.

  • Sony and Universal want Lightspeed to testify in their case against Suno.
  • The subpoena concerns training data risks and Suno’s market strategy.
