Sony has announced the RX10 V, reviving its RX10 superzoom line after a gap of nearly nine years since the RX10 IV. The headline change is a new 20.1-megapixel 1-inch stacked sensor that enables up to 30fps blackout-free continuous shooting, up from 24fps, making it better suited to action, sports and wildlife photography. However, it carries a steep price of $2,299.99 when it launches in early August, well above the RX10 IV's $1,700 launch price in 2017 (though broadly in line once inflation is taken into account).

The camera keeps the same 24-600mm equivalent f/2.4-4 Zeiss 25x zoom lens from its predecessors, but the body has been redesigned to resemble Sony's larger Alpha mirrorless cameras and now uses the NP-FZ100 battery for over 50 per cent more capacity. It inherits Alpha features such as an OLED viewfinder, 4K 60p video with S-Log3 and S-Cinetone, 575-point real-time autofocus with subject and human detection, and the A9 III's Speed Boost. It also adds USB-C livestreaming at up to 4K 30p, but loses the built-in ND filter and pop-up flash. The Verge's reviewer came away impressed in brief testing, positioning it at deep-pocketed casual shooters wanting a versatile travel camera, while noting a 1-inch sensor cannot match full-frame sharpness.
