Sony Shuts Down The Last of Us 2 PC Multiplayer Fan Mod

Push Square · 1 hour ago

Sony has intervened to block a fan-made multiplayer mod for The Last of Us 2 on PC, sending a legal request to modder Speclizer asking that the project not be released. The mod, in development since January, was intended to launch this month, but Speclizer confirmed via social media that they had received a letter on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment requesting it be shelved. The move highlights the tight control Sony maintains over its intellectual property, even for unofficial fan projects created without commercial intent.

The mod would have offered a relatively simple multiplayer experience akin to the original game's "Factions" mode, letting players compete as campaign characters across familiar locations, rather than replicating the more ambitious online mode Naughty Dog had planned before cancelling it. Speclizer thanked supporters and said the effort would carry over into a new, original project instead. As a result, The Last of Us 2 remains without any multiplayer option on PC.
